What Inspired The Story

The Day My Dog Got Loose is based on a true story. Our family adopted Liddy when she was 2.5 years old from a Pet Adoption Center. She was so loveable when we met her and had a huge open mouth smile jumping on our laps wanting hugs and to pet her. She immediately laid on her back and rolled to expose her tummy to be rubbed. This is a sign of trust. She chose us that day too. She still flips to the side or on her back to get belly rubs as often as you will give them.

The second or third day we had her, my daughter who was in third grade at the time said she wanted to take her out to use the bathroom before we were leaving for school that morning. On the way to her big fenced in yard, Liddy saw something (a squirrel or a rabbit) and pulled hard on the leash causing my daughter to fall down and let go of the leash. Liddy ran off. Luckily, she ran to the neighbor’s house because they had a couple hunting dogs in an outside pen that Liddy had heard barking. We were able to round her up quickly after making sure my daughter wasn’t hurt. She was upset that she had let Liddy loose, but it was a happy ending.
